What is a PFT?
A PFT is a Pulmonary Function Test. This test measures
the Volume of Air that is in your lungs and the speed
that the air is able to move out of your lungs. In the Pulmonary
Function Lab you will be asked to blow into a machine.
A skilled technician will coach you through the process.
This test will help your physician determine if your
lungs are diseased or normal.
What should I wear for an EKG?
The EKG will require you to remove your top and bra if you wear one. The technician will need to get to your
chest and ankles. So it is best to wear loose clothing that will allow
easy access. Avoid panty
hose. With these easy tips your EKG should take about 10 minutes to complete.
What is a stress test?
The stress test is conducted while you exercise on a treadmill.
It measures your heart's health under stress of physical
activity. Your blood pressure and pulse are also
monitored by trained technicians. A physician will be
present during the test and will evaluate the results.
You will be asked not to eat or smoke prior to the test.
You may need to avoid some medications. Wear loose
fitting clothes and comfortable shoes. The test takes
about 60-90 minutes.
What is a holter monitor?
A Holter test is a continuous tape recording of your heart's activity for a period of 24 hours. The unit you
will be wearing is a special recorder with wires hooked with electrodes to your chest. After the monitor is on, you are free
to go about your normal routine.
After the 24 hours has
passed, the monitor will be removed by one of the cardiopulmonary technologists
and read by a physician.
What is a sleep
study?
A sleep study is a standard approach to diagnosing sleep
disorders. It consists of recording a number of
parameters while the patient sleeps overnight at the
sleep center. The technicians then review the data
and the study is read by a physician. Symptoms of
sleep apnea may include snoring and daytime fatigue.
Please contact your physician for a referral to the
sleep center. |
