Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a swelling of a body part, most often the extremities, caused by and abnormal accumulation of lymph (interstitial fluid).  As this fluid is collected, the intercellular spaces expand and cause a noticeable enlargement and disfigurement of the affected limb.

Lymphedema can be treated with a gentle manual technique called Complete Decongestive Therapy.

1.  Manual Lymph Drainage: gentle manual treatment that improves the activity of the lymph system.

2. Compression Bandaging: use of minimally elastic bandages applied after step 1 to provide confinement of the limb.

3.  Exercises:  an exercise program is performed while wearing the bandages to assist in the stimulation and flow of lymph.

4.  Self-Care Training:  instruction in methods to protect the skin on the affected limb and avoid future complication.
