Speech and Language Therapy
Speech-Language
Pathologists (SLP's) help people develop and maintain their
ability to express thoughts and feelings. They work
primarily in a medical specialty, helping people recover
communicative competence following stroke, head injury or
disease.
Services include:
Diagnosis and therapy for motor-speech, voice and language
disorders.
Identification and treatment of swallowing disorders; dietary
recommendations and therapeutic training for the patient and
family.
Aural rehabilitation (lip and speech reading) to assist the
hearing impaired in communication
Teaching methods to facilitate communication improvement
after the patient returns home.
Special procedure done by SLP's include:
Fitting and placing of Blom-singer voice prosthesis for the
laryngectomee. The SLP teaches the patient voice
restoration using the voice prosthesis.
Evaluation and training of tracheotomized and
ventilator-dependent patients in the use of a Passy-Muir
speaking valve.
