medicare fraud alert

Last update: March 5, 2025 | 5:00 pm

What You Should Know

Ivinson Memorial Hospital has recently been made aware of a Medicare fraud scheme affecting members of our community. Patients have reported receiving Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statements for services they never received from companies they’ve never heard of. If you or a loved one are on Medicare, it’s important to stay informed and take action to protect yourself from fraudulent activity. Medicare beneficiaries in our community have received EOB statements from companies they did not receive services from. The fraudulent claims often list medical equipment or services that were never provided. In particular, we have seen suspicious charges from the following organizations:

  • Almaz (NY).
  • Sunshine Senior Solutions (FL).

These companies may be billing Medicare under your name without your knowledge. This type of fraud is a growing issue nationwide, where scammers obtain Medicare numbers and submit false claims for reimbursement.

What You Can Do

If you receive an EOB that includes suspicious charges, follow these steps:

  • Report the fraud immediately. Call the Medicare Fraud Hotline at 1 – 800-MEDICARE (18006334227) and report the unauthorized charges. Be sure to have your EOB handy to provide details.
  • Notify your secondary insurance provider. If you have a Medicare Advantage or supplemental plan, contact your insurance company to report the fraud and ensure no payments are processed.
  • Do not share your Medicare number. If you receive an unsolicited phone call asking for your Medicare number, do not provide any personal information. Hang up and report the call.
